Introduction....
AISCT® stands for Artificial Intelligence Site Characterization Technology. That expands the acronym without explaining anything, so here is the plain-language version: AISCT® is a set of field instruments that measure soil on site, in real time, and tell the crew whether the sample in their hand is above or below the criterion — with the confidence in that answer stated alongside
it.
The word doing the work in that sentence is not artificial intelligence. It is field. Most systems marketed as AI in environmental practice are software: they ingest data somebody else collected, in a laboratory or a database, and find patterns in it. Useful, but downstream of the problem. The uncertainty in a site investigation is not created in the spreadsheet. It is created in the ground, at the moment a sample is taken and measured.
AISCT® belongs to a different category, and the category has a name
